Synopsis

Cherbourg, November 1957. Geneviève Emery, whose mother owns an umbrella shop, is in love with Guy Foucher, a young mechanic. Geneviève’s mother does not approve of their relationship and would prefer her daughter to marry Roland Cassard, a wealthy diamond merchant. When Guy is drafted into the army to fight in the Algerian War, Geneviève gives herself to him before his departure.
